Booking Through Thursday Question of the week
Since “Inspiration” is (or should) the theme this week … what is your reading inspired by?
I think that this question could be interpreted a number of different ways, but I will answer a couple of the ways I take it.
What inspires me to read: Seeking truth is what inspires me to read. Truth which can be found in reading non-fiction and learning new things and new ways to think about old known things; truth which can be found in fiction, learning the reality of the human soul and condition; and truth which can be found in the feelings the things that I read bring up in my own life and being.
What do I read that inspires me: I am inspired first and foremost by beautiful writing. For me reading is not necessarily about the story, it is about the way it is presented. Skillful writers inspire me with the way they know, almost instinctively, how to marry the right words together. Out of the millions of possible words, that it is possible to string a few together and make me feel amazed and awed--that is inspiring.

I agree. Happy BTT!
I like that and is so true. Happy Thursday!
Great answer! Happy BTT.
I totally agree with you about the writing itself being inspiring. I know i sometimes keep reading a book that I find I am not particularly enjoying the story, but I can't stop because the writing is amazing!
Well said! Happy BTT.
Great answer about seeking truth and I also agree with the beautiful writing.
Well said! I love what you said here;
'Out of the millions of possible words, that it is possible to string a few together and make me feel amazed and awed--that is inspiring.'
I can't agree more.
Hear hear, couldn't have said it better. I have a good question for you, have you ever met a person that does not read? Like really does not like to?
I love the idea that you read for truth. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it really is true on so many levels for many of us, I think.
Beautiful writing can be very inspiring, I agree.
Answer to Roblynn,
I have met more people who really do not like to read, than I have met people who love to. Growing up I knew maybe one or two other teenagers who enjoyed reading. Most of my fellow classmates, through all the years of schooling, read only what was assigned for classes. Actually, half of them didn't even read the assigned books, just watched the movie or asked me about the books.
I think that there are a number of reasons people do not like to read. Possibly reading was not introduced in a positive manner. Possibly they had a hard time learning to read, and now have have those negative feelings associated with reading. Possibly they are much more active and hands on in their learning style, and find sitting in one place looking at little black lines to be pointless.
I like you answer!
I always go back to read authors whose writing style has appealed to me. Otherwise, I'm spontaneous in choosing my next read.
Well done!
I read for truth, beauty & understanding.
Thanks for visitng my blog. I also take plenty of breaks to read some "chick-lit". I'm trying to mix more classics into my reading though, since that is what our homeschool method is based on.
Reading is definitely a search for truth, whether we realize it or not. Every book we read helps us make choices about who we are and what we believe. :)
What part of Wyoming are you in?! I went to college in Rock Springs for a few years, and I actually miss it up there.
I find your remarks to be informed and passionate...ideas with which other readers also can identify...I would like to quote excerpts on our Barking Planet blog...looking at what others have commented here it is clear -- once again --that reading can also connect one to other people, where respect as well as ideas are shared...Best wishes, Robert
Reading, apart from being a learning experience, can be very emotional. I read to console myself, always like getting away. So my reading can be very spontaneous. It depends on what I have been reading. A lighter read is much needed when I've been on a roll of heavy books.
