Giveaway: Snow Valley Heroes, A Christmas Tale

Thanks to the generosity of the author, Robert McCarty, I have two copies of his new book Snow Valley Heroes, A Christmas Tale to give away. The books are written and illustrated by Robert and his wife Stella. To find out more about their books, or to read a sample chapter, visit the Planet of the Dogs website.

The authors are also involved with promoting a very unique reading program for children. To find out more about this visit the Barking Planet Children's Books blog.

Description from the publisher:

"It was a few weeks after Christmas when all the troubles began. It had been a lovely day in Santa Claus Village with the winter sun sparkling on the snow. Most of the elves, after enjoying a fine dinner cooked by Mrs. Claus, had gone to the workshop to continue cleaning up and to begin making plans for next year.
Santa, sitting in his favorite chair, had dozed off to dreamland when he was suddenly awakened by Tulip, the elf lady. “Santa! Santa! Wake up! Two of the reindeer are gone!”
This was how the troubles began. And they continued to grow -- missing reindeer, stolen sleds, winter storms – until it seemed there could be no more Christmas. It was then that Daisy, Bean, and the dogs who would become known as the Snow Valley Heroes arrived in Santa Claus Village…"

I can definitely see great potential for this program, especially for reluctant readers. However, for those already reading above grade level (my 8yo daughter) with a certain affinity for dogs, canines in the classroom may be more hindrance than help.

The book sounds great, my daughter would love it!

It's a cool idea, that's for sure.

No need to enter me, Lisa. I'm just dropping in to say thanks for the e-mail; I've got this posted at Win a Book!

We already have therapy dogs that come into our elementary school several times a year. The kids love them!

I love it, absoutely love it!!! Think how you get wisked away while reading a book (what better way to keep a child's spirits up than reading while being "treated") and to have your best friend by you the whole time!!! Love, love, love it! Going to contact them for our local hospital, perhaps I can even help out - how fun!
Thanks so much!!!

How funny. I often have my first grader read to Foxy our dog and he loves to do it. We already have a therapy dog who visits our schools in Joshua with his owner Jennifer Fletcher.

The kids really do love it.

I am also going to join and be a follower.

I'll add a post about your blog. I have a few moms come by my blog.

This sounds like such a great idea! Kids and dogs are a great combination and they form a special bond. Animals have an unconditional love that helps to draw kids out of their shell. More places should try these programs. Please include my name and thanks!

i think this is an amazing program that will really help the kids to learn! when they are reading to a dog they don't have any pressure to get it right and they can relax!

I'm absolutely an advocate of reading programs as I work at a public library. Reading is so important and an amazing way to reach people.
